After a couple of hours teory, we were sent out to the "obstacle track". Here we har a small lesson in passing small walls, barbed wire and narrow/small streams... I dont know why we didnt learn how to walk on water, because that would have come in handy later in the day.
NB! The following was my definition of a "small stream" before todays lessons.: Streams not wider than i can streach over them, or maybe easily jump over. That equals up to approximately 80 centimeters width for me.To make a long and boring story a little shorter, i will just tell that we all sweat'ed a lot, used a lot of blank ammo, got our heartbeat over 90% of full load, and got soakin' wet. And it did'nt rain at all.
SO ofcourse we had to cross a small stream a couple of times during the "actions track", and eventually we were informed that the only safe track through a part of it was... Ta-daa! IN the small stream :-/
We quickly reorganized a few vital belongings, and 'snug' into the black and cold small stream - YIKES! that was cold, and deep :-( I imediately felt the muddy water enter my boxershorts... from below. The water reached my belt.Ok - the only way out of this seemed to be forward, so we started to walk in the small stream. It was never wider than i could reach both banks simultaneusely with my left and right elbow, so it was a 'small stream' in my own definition. But my definition lacked a vital part. It did NOT consider the depth of a small stream!
After a while the small stream got deeper, it was no over my bellybutton. The "bottom" was mud from the knees down, and several underwater-branches did their best to make us trip. We walked on and on and on... and on... KaBooM!! Rattatatatatat... KaBooM!! *great*... artillery fire and 'enemies' I start to think: now lets see... privates handbook page Mmmmm...<Sergent mode="YellLikeHellIsComming"> Answer the %"#¤% handgun fire NOW! Get your sorry %#¤"*@§ A§§e§ on the bank and FIGHT BACK!</Sergent>
Ok... as said so done. We fought back and won ;-)
But then it was back on track in the stream - "mines EVERYWERE!!"
Now the stream got deeper, suddenly i lost contact with the "bottom", and at the same time 'lost it'
I got so scared of... well, sitting here in my warm and comfy livingroom i must say 'nothing', that i froze on the spot. I regained contact with something at the bottom and didnt trip, but my mate in front and my buddy behind me somehow figured i was in trouble, and was at me in a split second. They helped me get my grip back, both mentally and physically. The 'worst' thing about this is that i did NOT expect that i could get scared in that way, walking in a small stream... but then again, i have now reviewed me defnintion on 'small streams' to also consider the depth!
I guess we walked in the range of 3 Kilometers in total... that was what i felt after it was over... now, im sitting with "2 fingers" of golden liquid and a somewhat good feeling about todays experiences.
I dont care to check this story for mis-spellings, you probably get the point anyway, and i just needed to write about it while it is still fresh in mind :o)
Sleep tight out there - i know i will tonight.
You have to know your limitations before you can exceed them. I bet next time you're in the drink, you'll know what to expect and feel a lot more confident about it - despite carrying enough ammo and equipment to sink a small trawler. ;o)
